Virginia Tech spring position preview: Defensive line - Roanoke Times

Virginia Tech went into the 2019 season desperate for depth at defensive tackle. Returning starter Jarrod Hewitt was the only player on the roster with any significant experience.

The Hokies got a much needed boost up the middle from a 2019 signing class that featured five defensive tackles. Junior college transfer DaShawn Crawford jumped right into the starting lineup while true freshmen Norell Pollard and Mario Kendricks needed only a few weeks to secure spots on the two-deep.

Crawford, a 6-foot-0, 290-pounder out of Jones County Junior College in Mississippi, had 27 tackles with six for a loss, 3.5 sacks and three quarterback hurries. His play up front helped Tech generate a much more consistent pass rush after only coming up with 24 sacks (14 by the defensive line) in 2018.

The Hokies had 38 sacks (21 by the defensive line) in 2019.

According to Pro Football Focus, an analytics website, Crawford had a pass-rush win rate of more than 23% over Georgia Tech and Virginia. The site credited him for four quarterback pressures against Georgia Tech and six against Virginia.

The success of the first-year players accelerated the team’s rebuilding process at the position and allowed Josh Fuga and Jaden Cunningham to redshirt.
