The state of Connecticut has one of the largest gender pay gaps in the tech industry across the U.S., with men making $9,000 more than women in similar roles, according to a new study by an online tech employment website.
Despite recent pushes for equality, the tech industry continues to pay men more than women “even when other factors, including experience, roles, location and education are controlled for,” says a new report released by Dice.com. The study combined survey data from salary reports collected between 2017 and 2019 with supplementary data collected for 2019.
The “Gender Pay Gap in Tech” report, released on Thursday, said that in the New England region as a whole, men make about $6,444 more than women.
Among the six New England states, only Connecticut is included in the ranking of 20 states with the largest salary differential. Connecticut comes in at number 6 for the worst differential, at minus $9,203. The list is led by Utah and Alabama, where the salary differential is over $16,000 in both cases.
While men earn more than women in all regions across the country, the five other New England states — Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine and Rhode Island — that are not included in the top 20- list appears to offset Connecticut’s gender pay gap figure. The New England region ranks fifth out of eight, after the Southeast, for the gender pay gap in tech.
Last year, a survey by San Francisco-based Hired found Boston's wage gap for technology workers at 9%, wider than all other major tech hubs in the U.S. that the report took into consideration. In 2018, a study by The Boston Women's Workforce Council found that women in Boston earned 70 cents for every man’s dollar.
“The technology field continues to struggle to offer equal pay and applicable benefits to women,” Michelle Marian, CMO for DHI Group Inc., parent company to Dice, said in a statement. “When employers work to build a fairly compensated gender-diverse workplace, they inevitably create a more positive work culture with a wider range of ideas and creative solutions to address business needs and challenges.”
