FRONT ROYAL — Those who need help navigating the intricacies of their smartphones, tablets, laptops or other devices may find what they need through their local library.
At Samuels Public Library in Front Royal, staff who are skilled at technology are ready and willing to serve the community, free of charge, as part of its “What the Tech!” program.
“It’s our job to give them that confidence,” said Kitti McKean, adult reference supervisor.
Though staff will try to help people whenever they come to the library, McKean said “What the Tech!” is officially scheduled for 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday. Those looking for tech help can make an appointment at the Adult Reference Desk.
Many people come in looking for help finding and using features on their phone, deleting old contacts from their list or applying for jobs online.
The service has been especially useful for people who don't use technology much in their daily lives and now find themselves having to use devices they’re unfamiliar with.
“A lot of people need more help than just a little bit,” McKean said. “As I tell them, we’ll find a way.”
Most of what library staff members encounter are simple troubleshooting tasks that they can handle, but McKean said they might refer clients with more complex computer issues to a professional in the community.
“None of us are computer techs,” she said. The library has contacts in the community and also has recommendations on computer programs that can teach people skills they're looking to learn, such as using a computer mouse.
The “What the Tech!” program is open to any piece of technology that people can reasonably carry with them, McKean said.
“All day, every day, people come in and ask questions, and we help them," she said.
