5 burning questions facing Texas Tech this offseason: Who is the starting quarterback next season? - The Dallas Morning News

Here are five burning questions facing Texas Tech heading into this offseason:

Alan Bowman had the starting job won out of camp, but in his absence Jett Duffey exceeded expectations. These two aren’t the only ones with a legitimate shot at the starting job.

Redshirt freshman Maverick McIvor was a highly anticipated recruit but after undergoing foot surgery he missed the entire season.

Losing two of the best defenders in the BIg 12 provides a huge obstacle to overcome. Fortunately, the Red Raiders have two excellent replacements in the wings by the names of Riko Jeffers and Damarcus Fields.

The Red Raiders had a good deal of top-end talent on the defense this season but lacked the depth to sustain success. Jeffers and Fields should lead an improved Tech defense next season, but other leaders for next season’s defense aren’t quite as obvious.

Matt Wells began the season with a committee of three running backs. At the end of the season Thompson seized the role as the primary back. Ta’Zhawn Henry will be a junior next season and the two could split time as a tandem of primary backs.

It’s possible Thompson’s late-season surge secured him the starting job but Henry also impressed as a true freshman. Another possible back in the rotation is 2020 three-star commit Tahj Brooks.

Early in the season, Patterson’s defense excelled at forcing turnovers, which is why Tech had such success. Coleman III was a nonstop turnover machine but FIelds has the ability to cause a few turnovers himself.

Will a defense with more depth be able to sustain that early turnover rate which significantly dropped off at the end of the season? Only time will tell.

KeSean Carter had the game of his life against Texas in the final game of the 2019 regular season. As a member of the national champion track team Carter runs the 200m and 60m meaning he is one of the fastest humans on earth. If he can replicate his performance against UT Carter will be a terrifying weapon for the Red Raiders.

Erik Ezukanma was the trendy pick last season as a potential breakout player. Toward the end of the season, Ezukanma finally started to break out. The 6-3 speedy redshirt freshman tallied seven catches for 135 yards and a touchdown in the season finale against UT and found the end zone in his final three games of the season.
