BC Notebook: Defense makes up for youth with talent

All the unknowns played into BC’s hands on the way to a 35-28 win over Tech Saturday at Alumni Stadium. In the highest-scoring game between the two teams since their 33-31 slugfest in 2014, the Eagles racked up 432 yards of total offense (275 in the air, 157 on the ground), converted 9 of 19 third downs, and the defense forced five turnovers.

“To me, it’s a statement game because, A, we’re 1-0, B, we got a conference win, and C, we got battle-tested out here against a really quality football team and a really, really quality defensive football team,” coach Steve Addazio said.

The hallmark was a balance that came from having playmakers everywhere.

Brown completed 15 of 26 passes for 275 yards and two touchdowns. He connected with eight receivers, including tight end Hunter Long, who caught four passes for 53 yards.

“This is my fourth year being here. It’s time for me to step up,” Brown said. “It’s time for me to be a leader in all areas and aspects of the game. I would say we need a leader, we need somebody to step up and it has to be me. We were missing that the past two years and right now I’m just ready to step into that role.”

Kobay White had three catches for 73 yards and a score while Flowers turned two grabs into 91 yards and a touchdown.

Flowers’s name was already ringing out around Boston College during preseason camp and he quickly confirmed the buzz. His first touch was a 16-yard run on a jet sweep to start the Eagles’ second drive of the day. On his second, he hauled in a 33-yard pass from Brown for a touchdown that gave the Eagles a 7-0 lead.

“It felt unreal at first,” Flowers said. “And after that first run, AB just told me play my game after that, and that’s what I did.”

The Eagles had 18 pass plays go for 30-plus yards last season, the most in Addazio’s seven years at BC. But they believe Flowers is the kind of weapon that can make their offense even more explosive.

“It’s always nice adding some new cars to the garage, man,” Brown said. “It’s really a blessing, the kid is very, very talented. Zay and Kobay did a great job today. But overall, we have a ton of guys that can make plays and we’re ready to keep it going for the rest of the season.”

Dillon was relatively quiet. His 23 carries were chased with stretches of rest, but he still churned out 81 yards and one touchdown. Instead of heavy doses of Dillon, the Eagles gave the Hokies a different look with David Bailey, who ran for 38 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries.

“It’s a big part of the game for us,” Addazio said. “People are going to come in and say we’ve got two big backs, we’ve got to stop those backs. But what we have to establish is we’re going to go down the field with some guys that can flat run and go up in the air and make plays. I thought it was very evident today. So that’s been real important to our offense.”

The Eagles upped their record to 6-1 in season openers under Addazio. It was the first time they beat an ACC rival in a home opener since 2007.

“Winning the opener is extremely important,” Addazio said. “It validates your offseason work and gives you positive momentum. But winning your opener against a high-quality football team, I think you get better from that.”
